Help With The Form 5558
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) developed the Form 5558. Form 5558 is used to apply for a one-time extension of time to file:
- Form 5500, Annual Return/Report of Employee Benefit Plan;
- Form 5500-SF, Short Form Annual Return/Report of Small Employee Benefit Plan;
- Form 5500-EZ, Annual Return of A One-Participant (Owners and Their Spouses) Retirement Plan or A Foreign Plan; or
- Form 8955-SSA, Annual Registration Statement Identifying Separated Participants With Deferred Vested Benefits.
Effective January 1, 2024:
- Form 5558 is no longer used by taxpayers to apply for an extension of time to file Form 5330, Return of Excise Taxes Related to Employee Benefit Plans. A taxpayer can, instead, use Form 8868, Application for Extension of Time To File an Exempt Organization Return or Excise Taxes Related to Employee Benefit Plans, to apply for an extension of time to file Form 5330.
